Our Story

A husband-and-wife bakery inspired by Caribbean and Central American roots, serving the city of Gardena and greater Los Angeles.

We’re a husband-and-wife team with roots in Panama and Belize. We built Brown Sugar Bakery around the flavors we grew up with — tropical fruit, warm spices, rich cakes, and desserts made to bring people together.

The flavors that fill our bakery travel across both the Caribbean and Central America: pineapple, coconut, banana, cinnamon, allspice, brown sugar, and molasses. They’re flavors found in Belizean kitchens, throughout Panama, across the Caribbean, and at countless family tables, celebrations, and Sunday dinners.

Brown Sugar Bakery was created to share those flavors in a way that feels both personal and familiar — rooted in heritage, comfort, and celebration.

The hummingbird cake holds flavors deeply connected to the desserts and traditions found throughout Belize, Panama, and the wider Caribbean region. That connection is what made the hummingbird cake feel at home in our bakery — and why it became our signature.

Why “Brown Sugar”

Brown sugar is at the heart of so many of the desserts we grew up with. It adds warmth, richness, depth, and a flavor that feels comforting and familiar.

The name felt honest to the kind of bakery we wanted to create — one rooted in culture, flavor, and desserts made with care.

What We’re Building

Brown Sugar Bakery is built to be a neighborhood bakery with intention — fresh coffee, cakes by the slice, whole cakes, custom creations, and desserts made from scratch daily.

As the bakery grows, so will the brand around it: merchandise, kitchen staples, and lifestyle pieces inspired by the same warmth, culture, and flavor that define our bakery.

We’re not trying to be the biggest bakery in Los Angeles.

We simply want to create desserts that feel memorable, welcoming, and true to where we come from.
